The Entity Beneath: Secrets of Maryland’s South

The vast fields of Southern Maryland, colored in hues of golden yellows and bright greens, were a sight to behold on summer mornings. Amidst this vast expanse was young Eli, a boy of 12, who spent most of his days exploring the uncharted territories of his family’s farm.

One afternoon, while chasing a rabbit, Eli stumbled upon a hidden entrance, partly covered by thick vines and shrubs. It led to a cavernous hollow. The inside was eerily quiet except for a faint, melodious humming that resonated throughout.

Curiosity peaked, Eli ventured deeper. In the innermost chamber, he met Grae, an entity with a fluid form, shimmering under the scant light filtering in. His features were almost human but distorted, with elongated fingers and luminescent eyes.

“Hello, young one,” Grae’s voice echoed, smooth as silk. He narrated his tale to Eli – of how he was trapped centuries ago by the ancestors of this land, bound to the cave, never to enter the world unless invited.

As days turned into weeks, Eli’s secret visits to the cave grew frequent. The two shared stories laughed, and Eli began to trust Grae. Eli spoke of his family, his elder brother Toby, who was often too busy with farm chores, his caring mother Mama June, and Liza, his closest friend who shared his love for adventures.

Grae, sensing Eli’s trust, began planting the seed of liberation. “How wonderful would it be to see the world again, to feel the sun,” he’d often say. One evening, he finally asked, “Would you invite me out, Eli?”

However, things began to change. Mama June noticed her son’s absences. She grew suspicious when she spotted him talking to himself in the fields. Meanwhile, Liza, always eager for a new adventure, convinced Eli to show her the secret cave.

Upon seeing Grae, she felt an instinctual fear. She’d heard stories from Mrs. Lenora, the wise old woman of their town, about an entity trapped in the farm’s depths. Liza urged Eli to consult Mrs. Lenora.

Mrs. Lenora’s cottage was filled with old books, herbs, and talismans. As the kids narrated their encounter, her face grew grave. She recounted the legend: Grae, once a powerful being, had wreaked havoc upon the land until the ancestors, with great sacrifice, had trapped him in the cave.

Eli, realizing his mistake, confessed he’d almost invited Grae out. They devised a plan. With Mrs. Lenora’s guidance, they prepared an enchantment to strengthen the entity’s bonds. But for it to work, Eli had to lead Grae to the edge of the cave.

The night was dark, the winds howled as Eli approached the cave, calling out to Grae. As the entity emerged, Liza and Toby, hidden, began chanting the incantation Mrs. Lenora had taught them. Grae, sensing deceit, lunged at Eli. Just as he was about to touch the boy, Mrs. Lenora, with a powerful shout, released the final spell. A blinding light enveloped the scene.

Morning revealed an unchanged landscape. The cave entrance was sealed. Eli, realizing the danger he had nearly unleashed, hugged Mrs. Lenora, grateful for her timely intervention.

The farm returned to its peaceful existence, but Eli had learned a powerful lesson about trust, friendship, and the dangers that sometimes lurk beneath. The tale of that summer became a legend, passed down through generations, a cautionary tale of The Whispering Hollows of Maryland.
