Midnight Masquerade at the Mini-Mart

Clerk’s Testimony to Officer Vandelay:

“It was just another shift, Officer. Me and Jenny were behind the counter, watching the clock tick past midnight. That’s when he walked in, a tall guy in a suit and tie, wearing this black luchador mask with thunderbolt designs. You know, kinda like those Mexican wrestlers, but more… mysterious.”

Jenny, my coworker, she’s a college student studying anthropology. She’s fascinated by cultures, always reading some thick books between customers. She tensed up when the guy entered, and I can’t blame her. A masked man in a convenience store at midnight? It’s not exactly comforting.

He walked straight to the coolers, his footsteps eerily calm. Meanwhile, I’m trying to remember the self-defense moves my dad taught me, and Jenny’s whispering about some Aztec warrior spirits.

But then, the guy just picks out a couple of drinks, strolls up to the counter, and starts chatting. Just small talk, y’know? About the weather, the drinks… He even made a joke about his mask, saying it helps him ‘stay incognito in the crazy world.’ Oddly enough, his voice was… soothing, almost friendly.

He pays for his drinks – exact change, by the way – and heads out. We were just starting to relax when this other guy barged in. He looked rough, desperate, scratching at his neck. And then he pulls out a weapon, demanding money. Jenny’s frozen in fear, and I’m just fumbling with the register, hands shaking like leaves.

But here’s where it gets wild, Officer. That masked guy? He was still in the parking lot. Saw the whole thing through the window. He rushes back in, moves like something out of a martial arts movie, and disarms the robber with one swift motion. Then, he just touches the guy’s neck, and the robber drops, out cold.

He looks over to us, gives a nod, and walks out like it’s just another Tuesday. Leaves the weapon on the counter and everything.

We were stunned, to say the least. I mean, who was this guy? Some vigilante superhero? We didn’t know what to think.

And now, here we are, telling you all this. I know it sounds crazy, Officer Vandelay, especially with the stuff you’ve seen. But that’s what happened, every single word of it.”

Officer Vandelay listened intently, his expression unreadable behind his stern demeanor. Once the clerks finished, he nodded slowly, jotting down the last few notes in his report.

“You know, I’ve seen a lot of weird stuff in my time. So, believe me, when I say, I don’t doubt your story. There are a lot of strange and unexplained things out there. You two did well, staying calm and handling the situation. We’ll take it from here.”

With a reassuring smile, he closed his notebook and walked out into the night, leaving the clerks in a mix of relief and wonderment at the bizarre turn their night had taken.
